Crowded arches - underdeveloped lower jaw
Crowding in both arches, bad bite, underdeveloped lower jaw. Treatment involved braces, extraction of 4 permanent teeth. Better facial profile and lips are now in balance with the face creating a wide, beautiful smile.

Deep Overbite - lower front teeth bite into the palate
Example of underdeveloped lower jaw with large buck tooth look. Correction involved braces and a lower jaw advancement. Notice how the lower face became balanced with the upper face.

Openbite - front teeth do not touch
Example of a skeletal openbite. This occurs when there is an imbalance of growth between the upper and lower jaw bones, resulting in a more vertical growth. Correction involves braces for alignment and upper jaw surgery to lift up the bone so the lower jaw can rotate closed into the proper bite. Post-surgery the lips, nose, and chin are in the proper balance. Skeletal openbites can only be corrected with surgery.

Underbite - lower front teeth in front of upper teeth
Example of multiple skeletal problems. Upper jaw did not grow forward far enough and the lower jaw grew too much, creating a large underbite. Solution: Braces top and bottom for alignment of the teeth and upper jaw surgery to advance and lower jaw surgery to set back the long lower jaw. Notice how by bringing forward the upper jaw the patient has a normal midface and proper nose and lip angle. The lower jaw setback softens the strong chin and puts the lower face in balance with the rest of the face. This result could not be possible without the coordinated efforts of the oral surgeon and orthodontist.
